Chiropractic Background
- What exactly is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that overall health is based upon a normally functioning nervous system. The term 'chiropractic' comes from the Greek word chiro-praktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic care stresses the notion that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to adapt to its environment. The healing process looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs or chemicals, but by locating and adjusting the musculoskeletal area of the body to see which areas are functioning improperly.
- What kind of education and training do chiropractic doctors receive?
Chiropractors receive an education which emphasizes neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. Preparation for chiropractic practice is concentrated on three areas of learning:
- Basic training in the biological and health sciences (anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, clinical and radiological diagnosis).
- Specializing training in the chiropractic discipline (theoretical studies, practice, diagnosis and applications).
- Extensive clinical training.
- What conditions benefit from chiropractic care?
Although chiropractic is used most frequently to relieve lower back pain, numerous studies have found it to be effective for a variety of conditions, such as migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and infantile colic.
Adjustment
- What kind of chiropractic care do you provide?
We employ the activator technique which is gentle, non-forceful manipulation of the spine and extremity joints in order to provide quality chiropractic care.
- Do adjustments hurt?
Under normal circumstances, adjustments don't hurt at all. They provide a release of pressure and improper alignment of your body. Because of this, the patient may occasionally experience minor and very brief discomfort during an adjustment.
- Are adjustments safe?
Due to the natural process of chiropractic care, adjustments are extremely safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in the excess of one million to one.
